BIRDS!!!!
Some rather astonishing and unfortunate facts have come to light recently. Suburban sprawl, climate change, loss of habitat, especially open grassy areas, and the west Nile virus are to blame for a drastic decline of population among many of our bird species. The meadow lark and whippoorwill are half what they were 40 years ago. The National Audubon Society states that there are 432 million fewer birds now. These include, chickadees, field sparrows, grackles, little blue herons, and ruffled grouse to name a few. Though not thought to be in danger of extinction, it is rather a sobering thought. We must all do what we can to assist the birds in our gardens to survive.
