Care of

Indoor Plants

for

Winter

This is your good ole indoor gardening chairman with some timely reminders. Fall is coming and with that the first frost. You need to make plans for your indoor plants that have been enjoying “summer camp” outdoors. The first thing is deciding where they should go. The bulk of my indoor plants go downstairs in the basement. A large table there holds about 20 plants. Over the top are suspended three florescent lights set on a timer. The rest go into the sun room which is weatherproofed.
The second thing is to gather the plants together and see which ones need repotting. Repotting solves the problem of insect infestation in the soil and gives the plant a fresh new start. For those not to be repotted, a soil drench using an all-purpose insecticide will take care of ants and earwigs that sometimes inhabit the bottoms of the pots. The outside of the pots need to be scrubbed clean and then they are ready to go inside.
Another thing I do is gather slips of plants I want to save. These may be coleus, begonias, wandering jew or purple heart. Placed in a glass of water, these slips will grow roots and can then be potted.
