CENTRAL DISTRICT NEWS #7 May/June 2008
District Motto: “Let’s get together ….and plant natives.” PRESIDENTS: Please share this news letter with your club members. Greetings, Central District club members. This summer is flying by. Children are actually starting school this week, and the State Fair is still in full swing. It sort of seems early for school to start. E-Mail We are trying something new – E mailing the newsletter. Several of the Presidents requested it. Let me know if you prefer the hard copy. I am hoping that the Presidents will then E mail it to their members. I would welcome your comments. Calendars Oops, I goofed – In the last newsletter I said the deadline for sending in your calendar orders and money was Sept. 1. Chris, our treasurer, had wanted it by August 1, and I guess all clubs have been contacted by now. Maybe one of these years I will get my deadlines straight. Fall Meeting Plans are currently being made to send out the call letter for the Central District Fall Meeting on Oct. 30. It will be held at Primo North. I am hoping to see someone or two or three from each club. This meeting is going to be exciting. Don Smith, President of the Indiana Peony Society, will be speaking on peonies. Following his talk he will auction peonies and certificates to buy peonies. You are encouraged to bring non-member friends. For this meeting, Shamrock GC is doing registration, Sages GC will do centerpieces, Nora Belles GC is in-charge of the invocation and memorial services, and the raffle will be handled by North Harbour GC. Wildflower Workshop The workshop is set for September 17 at JF New Nursery in Walkerton, IN. There was room for 50 attendees. I heard last June that about every spot was taken. Welcome Back We want to welcome back the Nite Bloomers GC in Brownsburg, who were reinstated last month after a few years away. Margie Appleget is President of the Club. We are glad you are back! Convention It is Central District’s turn to host the State Convention in 2010. A group has formed, and is now planning the convention, which will take place April 11–13, 2010. Rosie Springer is Chairman, and Peg Powers is Vice Chairman. We will need a lot of help from each club. Right now I need a club that will handle registration. Please call me to volunteer yourself or your club to help in some way. It will be here before you know. Membership Our National Garden Club is sponsoring a membership contest. This contest will run from June 1, 2008 to May 31, 2009. Spring Green GC acted upon an idea and set up an information table at the local Farmers’ Market on Saturday. It resulted in 10 interested people who plan to attend the September meeting. They will do it again on August 23. Table Settings Around the World This beautiful collection and program will be held Sunday and Monday, August 24 & 25, 2008, at Congregation Beth-El Zedick, 600 West 70th Street, Indianapolis, from 11:00am to 5:00 pm each day. Glorious table settings, hors d’oeuvres, wine and music, and by just saying you are from a garden club, you will get all this for $5.00. Update Emerald ash borer was found in Georgetown, IN, just 14 miles from the Ohio River. This is the first confirmation that the tree killing beetle has spread in the state south of Indianapolis. The ash borer has been found in 19 counties, mostly in the Northern part of the state. Enjoy the rest of the summer! District Director
