"On the Wing"

Every year at this time I marvel at the flocks of black birds in the sky- miles and miles of them- all congregating to fly hundreds and thousands of miles to their winter grounds. The humming birds have all left for their migration and the Monarch butterflies en-route to Mexico and elsewhere. We gardeners have taken care of them throughout the spring/summer season, providing food, water and shelter. We always notice when the first Robin arrives, but do we notice the birds and butterflies leaving?  All of a sudden we are aware that they are no longer with us. I have to ask myself, would I like to be in their “Wings” just for winter survival- I think not. But I do promise myself that next year I will go the extra mile to take care of them all. After all, they have earned it!
