ON THE WING
by Jill Dinsmore

"There's a Bluebird in the orchard
I saw it just today,
'Twas flying to its nesting site
This sunny day in May"
Delbert Le Baron

Spring has finally "sprung". We now wake up to the "dawn chorus" which is an English expression for the early birds song. Isn't it the best time of the day. No cars, no kids, no noise, just you and mother nature's world.

The wrens have returned and birds are busy making their nest. Some already have young! We can make their nest building easier by supplying some of the materials. Save lint from your clothes dryer, shred up plastic bread bags,- put out soft hair from brushing dogs and cats. Place these materials outside where birds can discover them, and you will be amazed at how quickly it begins to disappear.

We found a robins nest which had blown down during our last storm. To our surprise, it had pieces of toilet paper woven into its construction. We then remembered that the neighbor teenagers had T-Peed the maple trees next door. Of course please remember to put out food and lots of fresh water daily.

On the way to garden club last week, our van windshield was "splattered" and it reminded me of another English saying that I grew up with - so I will leave you with this thought.

"Little bird flying high
Dropped a message from the sky
Said a farmer walking by
Jolly good job cows don't fly!"
